Suqualena Volunteer Fire Department has been a cornerstone of public safety in Meridian and surrounding Jones County communities since 1952. What began as a small group of concerned residents banding together to protect rural homes and farmland has grown into a well-equipped, professionally trained department serving thousands of residents.
Every member of our department serves without pay — they are teachers, mechanics, farmers, and tradespeople who dedicate their time and training to keep our community safe. Their commitment is rooted in a simple belief: that everyone deserves a rapid, professional emergency response, no matter where they live.
Rapid Response
Minimal dispatch times across rural and suburban areas
Community Roots
Staffed by people who live and work right here
From emergency response to prevention education, we offer a full range of services designed to protect lives, property, and peace of mind across Jones County.
Structured and vehicle fire response across Meridian and Jones County. Our crew responds to residential, commercial, and wildland fires with training and equipment built for rapid, effective action.
First-response medical care while ambulances are en route. Our volunteers are trained in emergency first aid and CPR, providing critical support during the most urgent moments.
Proactive safety assessments for homes, businesses, and community buildings. We identify hazards before they become emergencies and help you bring your property into compliance.
Free fire safety workshops and demonstrations for schools, senior centers, and community groups. We teach children and adults how to prevent fires and escape safely.
Vehicle extrication, structural collapse rescue, and hazardous material response. Our volunteers train continuously to handle the most demanding rescue scenarios.
Disaster readiness planning, emergency drills, and public awareness campaigns. We help families and neighborhoods prepare for severe weather, power outages, and other emergencies.
Suqualena Volunteer Fire Department is built on the belief that the strongest communities are the ones that stand together. Our volunteers don't just show up when the alarm sounds — they organize food drives, sponsor youth programs, partner with local schools, and show up for each other.
Whether you're looking to join the crew, donate equipment, or simply learn how to keep your home safer, there's a place for you here. We welcome everyone who wants to make a difference.

Support Our Mission
Donations of equipment, funding, or time help us maintain our apparatus and expand our services.
A handful of Meridian residents formed Suqualena Volunteer Fire Department to protect rural homes, farms, and families that were too far from city services to receive timely help.
As Meridian grew, so did Suqualena. New apparatus, expanded coverage areas, and formalized training programs transformed the department into a modern emergency response organization.
Today, Suqualena continues to adapt — investing in new technology, expanding prevention programs, and recruiting the next generation of volunteers to carry the mission forward.
"We don't choose this call — it chooses us. Every time that alarm sounds, we answer not because it's easy, but because someone out there is counting on us to show up."
